Whole House Audio/Video
Once the structured wiring system is in place, anything from stereo sound to infrared signals can be routed around the house.  One place to start is to build a whole house audio/video distribution network.  Using the structured wiring backbone, equipment located in a central equipment closet (or in the media room) can be used from anywhere in the house.  Because remote controls will function as if the device was in the same room, there is virtually no limit to where a TV and/or speakers can be placed.  So the TV in the kitchen can receive satellite, DVR, DVD, in-house camera signals, and just about anything else without needing unsightly equipment on the kitchen counter.
Modern Whole House Audio and Video distribution revolves around the concept of a media server.  Think of a media server as part stereo receiver, and part personal computer.  If done correctly, a lifetime collection of CDs, Home Video recordings, and DVDs can be put onto a central server for instant access by anyone in the household at any time.  And unlike a CD jukebox, different people in the house can play different music or videos simultaneously.
